Helping Pip and reassuring her owner

When Mrs White called the Pet Health Helpline, she was worried about Pip, her young Labrador. Pip had suffered from severe diarrhoea for 36 hours, and Mrs White was naturally concerned that something serious could be wrong. She needed some professional advice, and called the Pet Health Helpline.

After running through a series of questions with Mrs White, and asking her to carry out a couple of physical checks on Pip, Charlotte established the cause of the diarrhoea was unlikely to be serious.

Clearly reassured by the checks, Mrs White also commented that Pip was drinking more than usual.

Charlotte explained that her assessment showed Pip simply had an upset tummy, and since she hadn’t been vomiting, she simply needed a bland diet for the next three days. This was all explained to Mrs White, who was happy to be able to help Pip herself.

At the end of the ten minute call, Charlotte emphasised that Mrs White should call back if she had any further concerns over Pip, and said she was confident all would be well.

And Mrs White, who described the advice as ‘brilliant’, was clearly relieved that Pip’s prognosis was good – although she was sorry she’d have to miss her bedtime treats for a few days!

Pip’s case is typical of many of the calls taken at the Pet Health Helpline. It shows how valuable immediate professional advice can be, as although in this case it wasn’t an emergency, the help given instantly eased the owner’s worries and enabled Pip to get straight on the road to recovery.
