A hurricane-force ride to remember for the AHT

For the second year running, Managing Director of Agria Pet Insurance, Simon Wheeler, has completed the Prudential RideLondon to raise vital funds for the AHT (Animal Health Trust).

Despite the tail-end of hurricane Bertha treating the cyclists to driving rain, thunderstorms and fierce winds, Simon completed the grueling course for the charity in a very credible 5hrs 24 minutes.

Colleague Steve Withey, Agria’s Software Development Team Leader, also cycled for the eight-strong AHT team and despite battling punctures as well as the weather, Steve came in at just 6hrs 13 minutes Rain_RideLondon

The AHT provides clinical referral and diagnostic testing internationally to horses, dogs and cats. Their world-famous research programmes enable new diagnostic tests, treatments and vaccines to be developed that help thousands of animals worldwide.

Agria assists the AHT with their crucial work into common cancers. They liaise with policyholders with dogs who have suffered a certain type of cancer to provide a blood sample and cheek swab for the AHT’s research.

“A day of unusually challenging British summertime weather ensured this was a real ride to remember, but still a hugely enjoyable way for Agria to support the good work of the Animal Health Trust. If anything, the monsoon-type conditions contributed to make that last sprint down The Mall even more satisfying!” says Simon.

In this second year of the event, the 100 mile course, a legacy from the London 2012 Olympic Road Race, had to be cut to 86 miles due to the Box Hill and Leith Hill sections becoming too treacherous in the weather.

Simon and seven teammates from Agria are hoping for much better weather at the company’s next extreme cycling event, the 500 mile Extra Mile Vosges Challenge. The ride in September will see Team Agria cycling a demanding route through France and Germany to raise money for Dogs for the Disabled and other worthy causes.
