Are you seeing an increase of overweight pets in your practice? Do you have concerns that excessive food and poor diets, combined with inadequate exercise are increasingly affecting the health of the pets you treat?
You can help us on the way to fighting pet obesity by entering our poll below.
The recent British Veterinary Association’s (BVA) ‘Voice of the Veterinary Profession’ survey states that a staggering 95% of vets feel that better weight control would ‘significantly impact on the health of our dogs’. 64% surveyed also stated that a change in diet would make a big difference to their health.
These results were collated in the BVA’s second survey of its type, conducted at the end of 2014 and involving 448 small animal and mixed practice vets. The results come from the responses of 752 vets asked the question:
“Thinking about the dogs you see and treat, what impact would the following have on their health and welfare?”
At 95%, weight control was the response with the highest number of vets in agreement, while the second most popular response at 88% was that more exercise would have a significant impact on health and welfare.
This follows a 2014 survey by the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) that found that 77% of vets feel pet obesity is on the rise. The PDSA’s 2014 PAW report states that 80% of veterinary professionals believe that in just five years’ time, there will be more overweight pets than pets of a healthy weight in the UK.
How Agria helps prevent obesity
During our 125 years in animal insurance, we’ve seen the value of preventative veterinary care and remain committed to encouraging owners to keep their pets healthy. One aspect of our policies is that we give our owners £25 every year towards the cost of vaccinations and health checks. This way, your clients are given an extra incentive to see you annually and allow you the opportunity to advise them should you see their pet is becoming obese.
Join our poll – your opinion matters!
We’d like to find out more about the approach you take in practice to help owners who do come to you with an obese pet. If you have a moment, we’d be really grateful if you could answer the following three questions:
