Pet passports are back! (soon)

In light of a new trade deal between the UK and EU, pet passports will be returning in future, replacing the Animal Health Certificate (AHC).

As part of a new UK-EU trade agreement, pet passports are set to make a return for dogs, cats and ferrets travelling from the UK to the European Union or Northern Ireland.

They replace the Animal Health Certificate (AHC), which was introduced after Brexit. The scheme has drawn criticism for being expensive and onerous.

What is a pet passport?

Since their introduction in 2000, pet passports were hugely popular with families wanting to take their pets on holiday.

But since January 2021, those travelling with their pet to the EU need an AHC issued by a vet in the country of departure. Plus this has to be issued within 10 days of the dog or cat’s arrival in the EU.

The AHC remains valid for four months, covering forward travel to other EU countries, and re-entry into the UK. But each pet needs a new AHC for each trip, whereas the original pet passport remained valid for the whole life of the pet.

“A positive step for animal welfare”

The new agreement signalling the return of the pet passport has been welcomed by several organisations, including the RSPCA.

David Bowles, head of public affairs at the RSPCA, says: “We welcome this new UK/EU agreement as it includes a number of benefits that are good news for the welfare of animals.

“People who want to travel with their family pet will no longer need a pet passport to travel to Northern Ireland – and do not need to renew it each time they travel to the EU – meaning there’s less red tape in enjoying the companionship of your animal on holiday.

“We hope this change is implemented as soon as possible for the summer holiday period.”

Frequently asked questions

How much is a pet passport?

The UK-EU trade deal is still a new development at the time of writing, but it’s hoped that it’ll be cheaper to arrange a pet passport than the current AHC scheme. An AHC can range from £150 to £350, depending on the vet and your pet’s specific requirements.
