May 20th - World Bee Day: We’re buzzing about Bees!

Here at Agria Pet Insurance, our love for animals isn’t limited to our precious pets. We care about all animals, including the tiny ones doing so much vital work behind the scenes. On World Bee Day, we’re focusing on one of the most important (and one of our favourites!): the Bee.

Busy bees…

Bees are so important to the world around us. Yes, they help us have beautiful blooms in our gardens and delicious honey, but did you know they have an impact on every part of our ecosystem?

Around one-third of the food we eat relies on pollination, and bees are responsible for the vast majority of that. Without them, the availability, and cost, of many everyday foods like apples, tomatoes, berries, and nuts would be drastically affected.

Beyond food, bees help pollinate around 80% of all flowering plants, including those that support biodiversity and provide habitat for other species. Their work sustains entire ecosystems, so when bees thrive, nature does too.

But the fact is that bees are struggling. Loss of wildflower-rich habitats, pesticide exposure, intensive farming, and climate change are all contributing to their decline. In the UK, more than 35 bee species are under threat of extinction, and many others are seeing significant population drops.

If we lose our beautiful bees, we don’t just lose honey - we’re risking our entire food system, our economy, and the natural balance that supports life on our planet.

That’s why protecting bees isn’t just a nice idea thing to do, here at Agria we believe it’s an essential part of our sustainability plans.

We’re passionate about pollinators!

Pollinators like bees may not be insured by us, but they are part of the wider animal world we’re committed to protecting. As part of our Promise to The Planet and focus on animal welfare, Agria partners with the British Bee Veterinary Association (BBVA). The BBVA brings together veterinary professionals focused on improving bee health, raising awareness, and sharing knowledge with beekeepers, vets, and the wider public.

Together, we’ve also taken practical action.

Seeds for Bees

To help boost pollinator habitats, together Agria and the BBVA have distributed more than 11,000 packets of bee-friendly wildflower seeds to our pet owners and vet practices across the UK.

These seed packs include native wildflowers specially selected to support a wide range of bees, from honeybees to solitary and bumblebee species. When planted, they create pockets of pollen and nectar rich habitat in gardens, windowsills, and green spaces.

It’s a simple action to plant the seeds, but it has huge benefits. By planting these seeds people are helping support biodiversity, and it shows that helping nature and bees can start right outside your door.
The challenges bees are facing are complex, but the solutions don’t have to be. With the right partnerships, informed choices, and shared action, we’re trying to give pollinators the support they need.

This World Bee Day, we’re proud to play our part and no matter how small your space, you can plant wild and help protect something powerful – our beautiful, busy Bees.
