Meet Joe Stockdale
As the son of the late Olympic showjumper Tim Stockdale, horses have always been part of Joe Stockdale’s life. He joined the Oakley Hunt West Pony Club at the age of four, riding a pony called Miss Muffet, and went on to compete in tetrathlon, showjumping and mounted games. In 2013, he appeared at Horse of the Year Show as part of the Prince Philip Cup mounted games.
For several years, however, Joe’s ambitions lay away from the saddle. A talented cricketer, he represented Northamptonshire from the age of 11 and progressed through the county pathway, playing for the second team. He had planned to pursue cricket professionally, but his path changed when his father became ill in 2018 and Joe stepped up to help with the horses at home.
A hugely successful Horse of the Year Show that year proved to be another turning point. Joe won the Five Fence Challenge and finished ninth in the Grand Prix, helping cement his decision to pursue showjumping professionally and continue the Stockdale family legacy following his father’s death later that year.

His rise through the sport was rapid. After representing Great Britain at Young Rider level, Joe made his senior championship debut with Cacharel at the 2021 FEI European Championships in Riesenbeck.
The following year, Joe and Cacharel helped Great Britain secure team bronze at the 2022 FEI World Championships in Herning, the country’s first World Championship showjumping medal in 24 years. In 2024, they were selected as the travelling reserve combination for the Paris Olympic Games.
Joe added another landmark achievement to his record in 2025 when he jumped double clear with Ebanking to help Great Britain win the prestigious BMO Nations’ Cup at Spruce Meadows for the first time since 1996.

Cacharel: Opinionated, brave and special. Ebanking: Talented, intelligent and cheeky.
Early draw or last to go?
Last to go. I like knowing exactly what I need to do.
Favourite event?
Spruce Meadows has become incredibly special to me. Winning the Six Bar that Dad won and then being part of the winning Nations’ Cup team made it a week I will never forget.
Can’t live without…
My team at home. This sport is impossible without good people around you.
Biggest inspiration?
My dad. His determination, work ethic and ability to keep going through every high and low still inspire me every day.
Horse you’d love to ride (past or present)?
Fresh Direct Corlato, the mare my dad rode at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. I was too young to ride her at the time, but I remember what a character she was. She could be very opinionated, but once you had her on side, she would really fight for you. I would love to know what she felt like to ride.
