Dog steals chocolate on Easter holiday

Initially subdued   

Herbie was nearly 2 years old last Easter when he and his family went on holiday to Cornwall. Shortly after arriving in Cornwall and whilst unpacking, unbeknownst to them, Herbie found some chocolate.  Initially he seemed subdued, then they discovered that he had rifled his way through a carrier bag waiting to be emptied of food.  They realised he’d eaten a chocolate bar and some chocolate brioche buns about an hour before.  

Theobromine & caffeine toxic to dogs 

Knowing chocolate contains chemicals theobromine and caffeine, both of which are toxic to dogs, Adrian and his wife immediately rang Agria who gave them the number of a local vet. The vet recognised their insurance policy making everything much easier, and they loaded Herbie back into the crate to go straight to the vet. There he was made to be sick and, once his stomach was empty, the vet administered activated charcoal to bind with any toxins remaining in the gastrointestinal tract, and prescribed some other medication.

Fortunately, Herbie made a full recovery and was allowed out of the hospital to enjoy the rest of their holiday.

Adrian says they’ve had Kennel Club Pet Insurance (underwritten by Agria) since they collected Herbie from the breeder with a 5 weeks free policy which they carried on.
