What XL Bully owners need to know

We know that this is a stressful time for all XL Bully owners. Here, you can find out more about what the ban means for XL Bully owners in the UK and the changes you need to make for you and your dog.

From 31 December, 2023 it became illegal to:

Breed an XL Bully
Sell, advertise, rehome or gift an XL Bully
Abandon, or allow an XL Bully to stray in England and Wales
Have an XL Bully in public without a lead and a muzzle

As of 1 February, 2024, it is a criminal offence to own an XL Bully in England or Wales without a valid certificate of exemption. The certificate registers the dog on the Index of Exempt Dogs.

XL Bully's must be neutered and microchipped.

There are steps XL Bully owners need to take now, as well as rules to abide by for the rest of your dog's life.

Make sure your dog is microchipped
If they're not already, get your dog neutered
Get third-party liability insurance, you can get this through Dog's Trust for £25 per year
Apply for a certificate of exemption - as the application deadline has passed, you can now only get a certificate through court order. The Government are advising you to contact your local police force for help.

When you have your certificate of exemption, there are rules you need to abide by for the rest of the dogs life:

You will need to inform Defra if you permanently change address or if your dog passes away, or is exported.
Your dog must reside at the address on your certificate, only staying elsewhere for up to 30 days in a 1 year period.
Keep your dog muzzled and on a lead in public places. The lead must be held securely by someone 16 years or older.
Make sure your garden is secure.

Your XL Bully will always need to be on a lead and muzzle in a public place. This includes the car.

So long as your garden is fully secure, your dog can go outside and play. If your dog has lots of energy to burn, you could look for secure dog fields in your local area.

There are lots of ways you can stimulate your dog's brain inside and outside the home, including nose work and enrichment activities.

As long as there were no symptoms or signs before the start of the policy, your policy will cover a wide range of common conditions, including:
- Dental illness and injury (excluding routine check-ups, elective treatments, crowns and root canal procedures).
- Diabetes.
- Skin conditions.

What's not covered?

Cover for pre-existing conditions that started before your policy
But conditions that start during your policy are covered for as long as you have your policy.
The cost of routine pet care, such as vaccinations and check-ups
But, if you choose our most extensive cover, we’ll give you a £25 voucher every year to help with the cost.
Third-party public liability
You can get third-party liability insurance from Dog’s Trust. This is essential for XL Bully owners.

Frequently asked questions about XL Bully insurance

Third-party liability insurance can help with the costs of legal fees in the event your dog injures another person, animal or someone else's property.

Third party liability insurance is required by law for all XL Bully's in the UK.

Pet Insurance can help with the cost of veterinary fees for illness and injury. It is not a legal requirement, but can be a cost effective way of looking after your dog.

Frequently asked questions about XL Bully's

If your XL Bully was less than 8 weeks old when you applied for your Certificate of Exemption:

You need to get the microchip number to Defra by 31 March 2024.

If your XL Bully was unfit for a microchip when you applied for your Certificate of Exemption:

Send a copy of the veterinary certificate, stating your dog was certified as unfit for microchipping, to Defra by 31 March 2024.
You will then have 28 days from the expiry of the veterinary certificate to get the microchip number to Defra.

Your XL Bully must be neutered for your exemption certificate to remain valid.

If your dog was less than a year old on 31 January 2024, you must provide proof of neutering to Defra by 31 December 2024.

If your dog was over a year in age on 31 January 2024, you must provide Defra with proof of neutering on or before 30 June 2024.

To provide proof of neutering, you and your vet must fill out the confirmation of neutering form and send it to Defra.
