Where does the Siamese cat come from?

Siamese cats originate from Thailand, known as Siam until 1939. They were revered for centuries and often kept by royalty and Buddhist monks. Historical manuscripts dating back as far as the 14th century depict cats resembling the modern Siamese. They were first introduced to the Western world in the late 1800s.

What is a Siamese cat’s temperament?

Siamese cats are known for being outgoing and vocal. They love attention and companionship a lot, and hence don’t do well if left alone for long periods.

Loving

Siamese are very much into humans. They love human interaction, are extremely affectionate, and become best pals with their owners.

'Dog-cats'

Like dogs, they enjoy following people around, playing fetch and learning tricks.

Chatty

They have a talkative nature and often ‘chat’ with their owners using a loud, distinctive voice to express their needs. Or sometimes just to interact.

Siamese cat training and exercise

Here’s how to keep your Siamese active, and a little light training:

  1. 1

    Teach some tricks

Siamese cats are intelligent and respond well to positive reinforcement. This makes them the cat’s whiskers at learning tricks and commands.

  2. 2

    Play with them every day

They have high energy levels, needing daily interactive play to stay fit and happy. Bust out the feather wands or laser toys regularly.

  3. 3

    Use lots of mental stimulation

Puzzle toys and training games will help keep their sharp minds engaged, preventing boredom.

  4. 4

    Get involved

Siamese thrive on human attention. Try activities like fetch or walking on a harness. You’re likely to enjoy this too.

Siamese cat appearance and size

Siamese cats are a sleek, elegant breed with a distinctive graceful appearance. They have a slender, muscular body, long legs and a tapering tail, making them look athletic and refined. The head is wedge-shaped with large, pointed ears and striking almond-shaped blue eyes.

Typically, Siamese cats weigh between 3½ to 5½ kilograms, with males usually being slightly larger than females.

Buying a Siamese cat kitten

Siamese cat kittens grow and develop pretty rapidly. They can get to full adult size in 9-12 months, although they will continue developing physically until about 18 months old.

When you pick up your new Siamese cat kitten, be sure to ask the breeder what food to give them when you first take them home.

All kittens should be vet-inspected, vaccinated against feline distemper and cat distemper, and dewormed when you pick them up. You should also ask when their next vaccination and deworming treatment is due.
