Where does the Burmese cat come from?

As the name suggests, Burmese cats originally came from Burma (now Myanmar) in Southeast Asia. They first appeared in the UK around 1800 but didn’t really take off (the striking-looks of Siamese cats tended to steal the spotlight!), and over time disappeared. Fortunately, a few made it to the US in the 1930s, starting with a cat named Wong Mau, and they became the foundation of the modern Burmese breed. Today, Burmese cats are loved around the world for their sleek coats and affectionate nature.

What is a Burmese cat’s temperament?

Burmese cats are famously affectionate and people-orientated; they love to be part of the action and form strong bonds with their families.

Interactive

Burmese are playful, intelligent, and social, often thriving in households with plenty of human interaction or even another pet to keep them company.

Vocal

Burmese cats are also vocal, but their voices are softer and less intense than a Siamese cat.

People-orientated

Expect a cat that will follow you around, sit on your laptop while you’re trying to work, and “help” you with daily tasks.

Are Burmese cats friendly?

Yes, Burmese cats are known as one of the friendliest cat breeds. They typically get on well with children, strangers, and other pets, including dogs - as long as introductions are done properly.

Do Burmese cats like to be held?

Most Burmese cats enjoy cuddles, being carried around, or curling up in your arms. They're known for their floppy, relaxed posture when picked up, and many will seek out closeness with their owners.

Can Burmese cats be left alone?

Not for long. Burmese cats thrive on company and can become lonely or even depressed if they’re left alone for long periods. If you’re out of the house frequently, consider having a second cat or ensuring a friend or family member visits regularly.

Burmese cat training and exercise

Burmese cats are clever and active, making them easy to train and fun to engage with. Without enough stimulation, they can become bored or mischievous. Here are a few ways to keep your Burmese content:

  1. 1

    Play every day

Use feather wands, balls, or motorised toys.

  2. 2

    Teach them tricks

Some Burmese cats can learn to fetch or sit, as well as use a cat flap.

  3. 3

    Use food puzzles

These provide mental stimulation and slow down fast eaters.

  4. 4

    Add a second pet

Another cat or dog companion can help keep them entertained.

Are Burmese cats indoor cats?

Yes, Burmese cats are best kept as indoor pets, but they really benefit from having safe outdoor access. Their friendly and trusting nature can make them more at risk if they’re allowed to roam freely - they might get into trouble with traffic, other animals, or even be stolen. That said, they’re a lively and curious breed that needs plenty of space to explore, climb, and play. Without enough stimulation, they can become stressed or start acting out. A secure garden, enclosed catio, or even supervised walks on a leash (if they’re into it!) are great ways to give them safe outdoor adventures.

Do Burmese cats have health problems?

Burmese cats are generally a healthy and sturdy breed, but like all breeds, they can be prone to certain health issues. These include:

  • Tick icon

    Diabetes mellitus

Where the cat's body doesn’t produce enough insulin, leading to very high blood sugar levels.

  • Tick icon

    Burmese head defect

A rare condition where the skull and facial bones don’t develop properly.

  • Tick icon

    Burmese gangliosidosis

A genetic disorder that affects the nervous system, though it’s quite rare in this breed.

  • Tick icon

    Burmese hypokalaemia

Causes low potassium levels in the blood and can lead to muscle weakness.

Regular vet check-ups and responsible breeding practices help reduce the risk of these conditions.

How long do Burmese cats live?

With proper care, Burmese cats typically live between 12 and 16 years, and some even reach their late teens. A good diet, regular vet visits, dental hygiene, and mental stimulation all contribute to a longer, healthier life.

Buying a Burmese kitten

Burmese kittens are confident, curious, and love being around people, so it’s important to create a safe and stimulating environment right from the start.

Kitten-proof your home by removing choking hazards, securing cords, and keeping anything fragile out of reach. They’re an active breed, so make sure to provide plenty of toys, climbing posts, and time for interactive play. Burmese kittens do best in homes where they’re treated like part of the family from day one.
