Dog Breeds

For families with children, you’re looking for a breed which is gentle, and also patient and tolerant. If you have young kids in particular, they can be a bit chaotic and unpredictable for some breeds. It’s best to settle on a breed that’s happy to roll with the punches.

A couple of things to note here. One is that – regardless of how gentle your dog is – you should never leave them unsupervised with babies or very young children, just as a precaution. The other thing is that the vast majority of breeds are potentially good family dogs, provided they’re properly socialised. This is a vitally important step for integrating your dog or puppy into your family, and into the world at large.

Your kids will love: Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

When it comes to training, your life will be made easier if your breed is intelligent and eager to please. Some breeds are better than others for this. That’s not to say any breeds are untrainable, but some are definitely challenging, and perhaps better for more seasoned owners.

It’s important to reward your trainee and use positive reinforcement. This is the most effective and humane way to treat your dog, building a strong bond and a willingness to learn. On the other hand, punishing your dog will lead to fear and confusion. This is likely to lead to negative behaviours later on, and is best avoided.

Like an easy life? We don’t blame you! Boundless energy and two-hour walks aren’t for everybody, so it’s good to know which breeds typically need less grooming and adapt well to various living environments.

Be aware that, while some breeds are less effort, all dogs still need daily care and attention. And you should never leave your dog alone for longer than four hours, regardless of the breed.

Happy to chill: Beagles, Chihuahuas, Dachshunds

First of all, no breed of dog is truly hypoallergenic. As such, you can’t ever guarantee that people with allergies will be completely unaffected by your dog.

That said, there are a few breeds which don’t shed noticeably, or produce much dander (dead skin cells which can cause a reaction). This means they’ll generally be better for those with allergies.

Good for allergy sufferers: Poodles, Bichon Frises, Maltese

If you’d like your dog to appear on University Challenge one day, there are a few breeds in contention for being super-smart. These are the ones who leave others behind in terms of obedience, problem-solving and learning tasks with supreme speed.

Worth mentioning that, while all breeds need some mental stimulation, this is especially the case with very intelligent breeds. If their grey matter isn’t regularly challenged, they can get bored and display unwanted behaviours. So keep them on their toes!

Smarty pants breeds: Border Collies, Poodles, German Shepherds, Golden Retrievers

If you have a modestly sized place, such as a flat you might describe as ‘bijou’, you may be after a dog to match. Alternatively, you could just be looking for a pocket-sized breed because you don’t want to be dragged down the street by a big strong beast. These mini breeds are 100% lovable, but will give you a run for your money in other ways.

Small breeds with big personalities: Pomeranians, Yorkshire Terriers, Toy Poodles, French Bulldogs

If you like the idea that your home will be protected by a natural guard dog, there are a few breeds which are up to the task. The following all make excellent guard dogs, although proper training and socialisation are absolutely vital.

Great guard dogs: German Shepherds, Rottweilers

Anything for a quiet life? There are a few breeds known for their quiet and calm demeanour, making them great companions for a peaceful home. Please note though that dogs are all individuals, so you may get the occasional borker among these breeds.

Low-temperature breeds: Greyhounds, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

If you’re up and at ‘em, you might be looking for a breed which needs lots and lots of daily physical stimulation. This usually goes hand-in-hand with mental stimulation, so don’t skimp on that part.

Will keep on going and going: Border Collies

On the other end of the scale, there are several breeds which are content with short walks and indoor play. These are ideal for owners who don’t have time for regular long walks, or those with limited mobility. Although all dogs of all breeds will benefit from at least one walk a day, even if it’s a short one.
