Where does the Jack Russell Terrier come from?
The breed was developed in the 19th century by the English clergyman, John Jack Russell. John was an avid hunter who wanted to create the perfect hunting dog. This meant it needed to be able to keep up with horse riders and foxhounds, but was also small enough to chase foxes, badgers, and other game from their burrows. This led to two breeds: the Jack Russell Terrier and the Parson Russell Terrier, the latter being taller. Though originally from Britain, the breed was further developed in Australia into the dog we recognise today.

Jack Russell Terriers are lively, confident, and social dogs. Early socialisation and consistent training are essential for them to become well-mannered family pets.

They are very intelligent, once home, setting routines from day one helps prevent bad habits. Puppy training classes are highly recommended.
Affectionate
They form strong bonds with their families and are affectionate, loyal, and adaptable. While they thrive in both active and quieter households, daily exercise is a must - they’re energetic little dogs!
Vocal
Jack Russell Terriers can be quite vocal dogs, though early training can help manage excessive barking.
Friendly
With proper introduction and continued positive experiences, Jack Russell’s usually get along well with other dogs and pets.
Something to remember
Due to their independent nature, it’s important to familiarise them with grooming and handling early on - this makes vet visits and nail trimming much easier.

Appearance and size of the Jack Russell Terrier
Jack Russell Terriers are compact and athletic, with triangular ears framing their alert, dark eyes. They stand 25-30cm tall and weigh 6-7kg. Their close relative, the Parson Russell Terrier, is taller and slightly larger.

Jack Russell Terriers have weather-resistant coats that are easy to clean. They come in three coat types:
- Smooth-haired - minimal grooming needed, mostly during shedding periods.
- Broken - a mix of smooth and rough, requiring occasional trimming.
- Rough-haired - needs regular trimming.
